How to play roulette

How to play roulette

One of the most popular games in online casinos, as well as land-based casinos, is roulette.

We owe the creation of roulette as we know it today to Blaise Pascal, but there is documented evidence of roulette’s existence as a game of chance as far back as the Middle Ages.

This casino game is simple enough that beginners can learn the basics in just a few minutes, but the strategy and stakes are complex enough to entice more experienced players to take part in this game of chance.

This combination of ease of learning and strategic complexity makes roulette one of the most popular casinos.

In this article, we have put together a beginner’s guide to playing roulette, that is, instructions on how to start playing this game of chance.

Later, you can learn more tricks and strategies for winning at Roulette, but first, you need to learn how to play.

So we’ll start by explaining the basics, such as the types of betting and the differences between roulette games. Remember that most casinos offer the chance to play for points (to play for free), so you can practice without betting money.

Sequence of play

The game of Roulette itself is straightforward. The phases of each game are as follows:

  1. Players place their chips on the table to place a bet (the different bets are explained in the “Betting/gaming types” section below). Each player has other colored chips: black and red.
  2. The dealer spins the roulette wheel and throws a metal ball into it while the players continue to place their bets. When the ball loses speed, the croupier announces that no more bets are accepted, with the words “No more bets.”
  3. The ball stops at one of the numbers, and the dealer removes all the losing chips from the table.
  4. The winning players are paid the amount corresponding to the type of bets they have chosen.
  5. The game is restarted.

Types of the tape measure (and which one to choose)

Soon we will devote an entire chapter to the different types of Roulette, but for now, we offer you this brief explanation of the two main roulette wheels:

  • American Roulette: Has 38 slots. 36 are red or black, and the rest are zero or double zero and green. Although there is also American Roulette with one zero.
  • European Roulette: It has 37 slots, only one of which is green (zero).
  • French Roulette: This is very similar to European Roulette but has some differences in table type and betting.

The main difference between American and European Roulette is the casino advantage: when you hit ‘0’, you have a gift, but if you also hit ’00’, as in the case of American Roulette, you have a more significant advantage. For this reason, we recommend that you play European Roulette, as mathematically there’s a better chance of winning.

  • In Roulette, with one zero, the home advantage is 2.7%.
  • In Roulette, with two zeros, the house advantage is 5.26%.

However, today, online casinos have adapted their American roulette wheels to only have one “0” square, so they almost always have the same advantage as European roulette wheels because everyone knows that the lowest house edges are European ones. So there’s no point in playing American Roulette.

Suppose you’d like to know more about the characteristics of each of these roulette wheels versus the other. In that case, you’ll find more information by clicking on the “American Roulette” and “European Roulette” links we’ve added above.

Types of bets/games

There are many different bets that you can make in online and casino roulette. Here is a selection of them from which you can choose:

Bets 1:1

These types of online roulette bets are made by taking the following options:

  • Red or black
  • Even or odd
  • 1-18 or 19-36

With all these bets, you have a 50% chance of winning (excluding, of course, the “0” field).

Bets 1:3

You can bet on three groups of 12 numbers:

  • 1-12
  • 13-24
  • 25-36
  • You can also bet on one of the 3 columns of numbers

These rates are paid 2 to 1.

Full or half-full rates

Total bets are bets in which you select any one of 36 roulette numbers. You can even choose ‘0’ or ’00’ in American Roulette. These bets are paid at a rate of 35 to 1.

There are many other combinations, such as betting on any of the numbers in a column (vertically) of a table, betting “snake” on diagonal squares, betting on a “corner” (4 numbers in a corner)…

Another option is to place a chip between two numbers to split the bet between those two numbers. You can also bet on 4 numbers by placing a chip on the intersection of their squares.

As you gain experience, you can add chips to the sides of the betting mat, denoting rows and other more complex combinations. There are many variations, but we don’t want to confuse you any further.

What would be a good roulette betting combination with the types of bets we’ve covered?

In our opinion, a combination of 1:1, 1:3, and numbers is the best way to start playing online Roulette; this way, all fronts will be covered.

Special roulette rules

Some casinos have additional roulette rules that modify the game a bit, especially regarding the house edge, to benefit from them.

Therefore, we recommend that you play Roulette in casinos that offer these rules, or activate them at the first opportunity, as they act as a wild card:

  • Le Partage: applies to 1:1 bets (e.g., even/odd), allowing you to get half your chance back if the ball hits the “0” or “00” field.
  • Bailout: Similar to the previous rule, but if the ball hits the “0” or “00” field, the bet is frozen (in jail) so that the roll is repeated with the same bet.
  • Surrender: This rule only applies to American Roulette. It is the same as “Le Partage” but applied to a given roulette wheel.

Online roulette strategies and techniques

In addition to the different types of betting and playing that we have discussed above, several roulette strategies and techniques even have names: Martingale, Reverse Martingale, d’Alembert Method, Fibonacci Strategy… All these strategies are based on mathematics.

Once you’ve memorized the game sequence and practiced some free roulette games, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with these roulette strategies to improve your game.

Money management tips

Apart from learning how to play Roulette, it is more than advisable to follow many guidelines so that the money you put in will last as long as possible. One of them is to take advantage of the casino bonuses offered by the gambling houses.

Welcome bonuses are the most generous, but almost all casinos also offer other types of promotions once you’ve already become a player on their site: deposit bonuses, free spins, cashback bonuses, reload bonuses…

But be careful! Carefully read the terms of these promotions because to withdraw your winnings, you must meet specific requirements, such as wagering a certain number of times the amount of the bonus received.

On the other hand, the casino game, online Roulette, is fascinating and allows you to win a lot of money. Similarly, when the ball doesn’t land on any of your bets, it can eat up your bankroll very quickly.

Our recommendation or advice is to divide your bankroll into at least 30 different roulette games so that you can play a good session. Remember that you can always increase the amount if you make a good profit.
